What is Chinmudra?
Chinmudra Academy for Performing Arts, founded in 2011 in Bengaluru by Bharatanatyam dancer and teacher Shubhadha Prabhakar, is today a well-established institution dedicated to the training and propagation of Bharatanatyam through a structured, traditional, and academically grounded approach.
What began with two students has grown into an academy training over 180 students across levels. Chinmudra places strong emphasis on long-term, methodical training, focusing on adavu technique, posture alignment, laya and tala, abhinaya, stagecraft, and aesthetic sensibility. Equal importance is given to theory and practice, with conscious stress on auchitya in movement, expression, costume, and presentation. The curriculum draws from classical texts such as the Nāṭyaśāstra and Abhinaya Darpana, nurturing dancers who understand both the form and its philosophical foundations.
Chinmudra Academy is affiliated to Suro Bharati Kala Kendra, enabling the academy to conduct Central Government Bharatanatyam examinations within its own premises. Students also appear for State Government examinations conducted by Gangubhai Hanagal University. Multiple batches of Chinmudra students have appeared for both central and state level examinations, consistently achieving 100% distinction results. The academy has successfully trained students for Arangetram, with the 10th and 11th Arangetram of Chinmudra scheduled this year. Chinmudra presents an annual thematic performance every year, which has been widely appreciated by senior artistes, scholars, and rasikas for its conceptual clarity and quality. The academy also brings out a quarterly newsletter, Mudra-Vārtha, as part of its effort to document learning, reflections, and artistic activity within the institution.
